How Florida’s Home Hardening Program Can Save You Thousands on Your Next Roof

If you’re a Florida homeowner, there’s a state-backed program that could help you make your home stronger against storms and lower your insurance premiums.

It’s called the My Safe Florida Home Program (also known as the Florida Home Hardening Program), and it’s designed to fund targeted improvements — like certain roof upgrades — that make homes more resistant to wind damage.

The funding is limited and demand is high, but if your home qualifies, you could receive up to $10,000 in grant funds to put toward eligible projects.

What the Program Does

According to Steven Fielder, Chief Business Officer for the Florida Department of Financial Services,

“The purpose of the Program is to assist homeowners with first determining where there are areas of their home that could be improved and then provide financial assistance to targeted home hardening activities that will protect their home against future wind damage.”

That includes improvements like:

  • Opening protection — hurricane impact doors and windows.
  • Roof-to-wall connections — hurricane clips or straps.
  • Roof-to-deck attachments — improved fastening between roof decking and trusses.
  • Secondary water resistance — specialized underlayment products to prevent leaks if shingles are lost in a storm.

Who Can Apply?

For 2025, the program is focused on low- and moderate-income households. To be eligible, your property must:

  • Be homesteaded
  • Have been built before 2008
  • Have an insured value under $700,000

Priority is given to seniors and low-income applicants.

How the Process Works

Here’s the general outline:

  1. Apply for a Free State Inspection – The inspection identifies which improvements would make your home stronger and could qualify for funding.
  2. Receive Your Report – This details the eligible upgrades for your home.
  3. Apply for the Grant – Low-income households may receive the full cost covered (up to $10,000), while moderate-income households receive $2 from the state for every $1 they contribute.
  4. Hire a Licensed Contractor – You choose the contractor you want to complete the eligible improvements.
  5. Complete the Work & Receive Reimbursement – Once the work is finished and inspected, the state reimburses you directly for the approved amount.

Why It Matters Now

The application portal reopened on August 4, 2025, and demand has been high. Funds are first-come, first-served, and Fielder notes the average insurance discount for participants who qualify is $812 per year.

In addition to lower insurance premiums, these upgrades can give you greater peace of mind during hurricane season. And if more homes in a neighborhood are “hardened,” the reduced risk can have a positive effect on the whole community’s insurance rates.
